The SQ carried out a tobacco smuggling operation in Joliette

An operation relating to tobacco smuggling was carried out in Joliette on January 20 by the Contraband Investigation Department of the Sûreté du Québec, with the collaboration of the MRC station.

A 62-year-old man and a 74-year-old woman allegedly involved in the sale of tobacco and illicit cannabis as well as the transport of contraband tobacco were arrested.

A section of possession of methamphetamine with a view to trafficking was also added to the file during the operation.

The suspects could face charges under the Tobacco Tax Act, the Cannabis Act as well as the Act Regulating Certain Drugs and Other Substances during an appearance at the courthouse.

A search carried out in a residence on Papineau Street and in a vehicle allowed authorities to seize the following items:

• 9 kg of cannabis;
• 33,200 contraband cigarettes;
• 70 methamphetamine pills;
• $1,000 in Canadian money;
• 1 vehicle worth $4,500.
