The new score of the Bastia Italian Film Festival pays tribute to Ennio Morricone

Like last year, the 37th edition of the Italian Cinema Festival will take place in two stages, from February 1 to 16. The first week will take place at the Alb’Oru cultural center and at the Le Studio and Le Régent cinemas and will be punctuated by film screenings and other cultural highlights. We will be able to watch these feature films again during the second week at the Studio.

The program will offer 25 films divided into the usual categories (competition, panorama, Ciné Memoria, Ciné Jeunesse) and a new one: the aptly named Ciné Sorpresa.

These meetings discuss transalpine cinema from all angles, including music.

Just looking at the poster for this new edition, where we see Federico Fellini and Giuletta Masina photographed during the presentation of On the street in 1954 at the Venice Film Festival, we heard the unforgettable melody of Nino Rota resonating in his head, inseparable from this classic of the 7th art. It will be screened at the Studio on Thursday February 13 at 6:30 p.m., in partnership with the Ciné-Club de Bastia.

Tribute to Domenico Modugno

There will also be music, as usual, at the opening and closing of the festival.

On Saturday February 1 at 8 p.m., at the Alb’Oru, the Corsica Armonia orchestra will give the “la” of this 2025 edition. Made up of musicians from the Lyre Bastiaise, the Aria d’ and other groups such as the Show de vents de la Plaine Orientale and the Lyre Cortenaise, he will perform film soundtracks composed by Ennio Morricone, Nicola Piovani and Nino Rota.

On Saturday February 8, at 8 p.m., still in the cultural center of the southern districts of Bastia, the public will be able to discover the winners after the prelude Flying, singing. During this concert staged by Orlando Forioso, three Neapolitan singers and musicians, Chiara di Girolamo, Domenico Nappi and Alfonso Brandi, will pay tribute to Domenico Modugno. “Cantautore”, that is to say author and performer of his songs, he was, recalls the festival, the “sound column” of Italy at the end of the Second World War. We owe him in particular the eternal song In the blue painted bluebetter known under the title Flyone of the most covered titles in the world.

Domenico Modugno also performed the credits of the film Uccellacci e uccellini, an aria we owe to the great Ennio Morricone.

“Ennio Morricone, the explorer of sounds”

We cannot indeed talk about film music, well beyond the 7th art of transalpine, without mentioning the essential Ennio Morricone. “He’s a genius.underlines Jean-Baptiste Croce, president of the Bastia Italian Cinema Festival. My great regret is not having been able to bring him with his symphony orchestra, with a hundred musicians.”

The composer’s work will be present through the soundtracks played during the concerts and the conference “Ennio Morricone, the explorer of sounds”, on Saturday February 1 at 4 p.m. in the guest rooms of the Hôtel de la Collectivité from Corsica to Bastia. At the invitation of the Dante Alighieri association, which actively participates in the festival, musicologist Chloé Huvet will offer a journey to the heart of the musical universe of Ennio Morricone.
