The mobilization of local residents and an association was not enough to save them from a disastrous fate. In this early January 2025, the sixteen lime trees which border rue Madame-Hégotin the city center of Grisy-Suisnes (Seine-et-), were cut. A long-planned felling, which took place as part of a street repair project in the city center.

At the heart of a redevelopment

Indeed, the city plans to redevelop rue Madame-Hégot as well as the perpendicular street which passes in front of the town hall. “The idea of our project is to redo the road which is in very poor condition. Our desire is to give space back to our businesses and to redesign new parking spaces,” presented Jean-Marc Chanussot, the mayor of Grisy-Suisnesduring a public meeting on September 14.

The project plans in particular to redo the tread, but also to correct the size of the track. “Rue Madame-Hégot is quite uneven, since it is in the shape of a trapezoid. This configuration makes difficult bus passage in this area », announced the first city councillor.

Reviewing the width of the road also required reviewing the positioning of the sidewalks. “They must meet standards to allow people with reduced mobility to move around perfectly,” he insisted.

However, the construction of sidewalks to PMR standards jeopardized the maintenance of sixteen lime trees. Some local residents, accompanied by local members of the National Tree Monitoring Groupalias the GNSA, then strongly opposed their slaughter. “Following these various debates, I decided to make a request to the prefecture of Seine-et-Marne for authorization to proceed with their slaughter. The services gave me their approval. This is why they were sawn at the beginning of January,” summarizes Jean-Marc Chanussot.

Other trees will be replanted

Before adding: “Most of them were sick. But we must not forget that for a tree cut down, we will replant one “. Site development work will therefore continue for a few weeks. They will be divided into two distinct phases in order to cause the least disruption to the city center.
