The weather continues to fluctuate while we are still in the heart of winter. After a particularly cold week, temperatures are rising a little, unfortunately this mild spell does not set in alone: rain is expected over a large part of the territory.
After a calm, but very cold period over a large part of France, a radical change is on the horizon. After this wave of extreme cold which affected a good part of the country last week, the week of January 20 looks a little more lenient on paper. If the first days retain their wintry character with particularly low temperatures, the weather situation will change quickly from Wednesday. A low pressure system over the Atlantic will cause temperatures to soften, but at the cost of wetter weather across the country.

If this Monday January 20 keeps some departments on yellow alert for snow and ice, from Tuesday January 21 things change. Indeed, the week begins with conditions similar to those of the previous days, maintaining relatively dry and cold weather, particularly in the northern half of the country. However, this stability will be short-lived since from the middle of the week, the arrival of a depression over the Atlantic will shake things up. The precipitation, initially localized in the South-East, will gradually spread across the entire territory. Here are the detailed forecasts for this contrasting week.

A start to the week between freshness and clearings
Monday will be dominated by calm weather, like the previous weekend. Thanks to the anticyclone still present, the majority of regions will remain sheltered from precipitation. However, morning temperatures are expected to be freezing in the North, oscillating between -3°C and 2°C, while the South will record minimums of between 2°C and 10°C. If the weather remains relatively overcast across the whole country in the morning, in the afternoon, clearings will gradually appear in the West, particularly in Brittany and the Centre-Val de Loire. Note that persistent rains will continue to water the South-East, particularly near the Mediterranean areas.

Tuesday will mark a slight improvement for the North, where the sun will return in the morning, the South, for its part, will maintain mixed conditions, with clearings in certain regions, but still overcast weather and residual rain in the South -East. Temperatures will change little compared to the day before, remaining cold in the north in the morning, and milder in the south in the afternoon, with peaks exceeding 10°C. A return to dry conditions is also expected in the South-East in the afternoon.
A change from Wednesday
The calm of the first days will be broken on Wednesday by the arrival of the first disturbances. A mass of humid air coming from the Atlantic will settle over the country, leading to overcast skies over almost the entire territory. The South-East and the north-west quarter will be particularly affected by the first morning rains, which will gain ground over the hours. Despite these more gloomy conditions, temperatures will begin a significant cooling. Highs in the afternoon will reach between 7°C and 10°C in the North and between 10°C and 17°C in the South, signaling the end of the cold episode. Thursday will be marked by widespread deterioration. The rains will spread across the entire country, sparing only a few pockets in Brittany and Pays de la Loire, where the sun could timidly make an appearance.

The week will end as it began, but with a significantly wetter character. Friday will still see frequent rain, especially in the northern half, while the southern end will benefit from milder and sunny weather. The temperatures will confirm the mild spell with maximums oscillating between 10°C and 17°C across the country. The weekend is expected to be generally rainy over a large part of the country, with temperatures still mild for the season. Those who love going out will therefore have to deal with an umbrella!
