“We discovered the first, disemboweled…”: two alpacas killed on a farm in Tarn by a dog attack

The herding dog intervened to try to scare the animal away, but it was too late for the two alpacas on this Tarn farm.

This Tarn farm is devastated by the disappearance of two of its alpacas, probably killed by a dog. “Despite the intervention of Romeo, our herding dog, who tried as best he could to scare the beast away, our two alpacas died from their wounds,” regrets the Ferme de la Bonicarde, in the Tarn, in a message shared on social networks Saturday January 18, 2025.

“We discovered the first, disembowelled and dead. The second, we tried to save him, but it was too late”, tells Cathy Loup, one of the breeders on the farm, to our colleagues at La Dépêche du Noon. The French Biodiversity Office concluded that there was an attack, without being able to confirm whether it was a stray dog or a wolf. Unfortunately, the farm's cameras were not focused on the scene of the attack to gather additional clues.

The dog must be found to hope for compensation

The alpacas had only been there for a few weeks, with the aim of organizing tours of the farm. A hard blow for this family farm established since 1962 which was seeking to diversify its activity, here in the Tarn but also in its various farms and its lodges. Especially since to hope to be compensated, the farm will have to find the dog responsible for the attack. “And that’s another story…”, sighs Cathy Loup.
