Marc Coucke: “I made a bad decision”

In just over a week, Marc Coucke will reach a new milestone in his life. The entrepreneur will celebrate his 60th birthday, an event that will certainly not go unnoticed. In a remarkable interview, Coucke delved into his past, resulting in… a lot of self-criticism.

Marc Coucke is today a multimillionaire, but this obviously did not happen by chance. The businessman initially fell on hard times, but he created huge success with Omega-Pharma.

Thanks to the sale of his company in 2014, the Ghent native suddenly became rich, having pocketed around 620 million euros. However, Coucke decided to reinvest this sum mainly in the Belgian economy. He has thus enjoyed great success, as evidenced by the numerous businesses he owns in Durbuy, as well as the Pairi Daiza zoological park. Its other investments include Snow World and the Arenal Group, among others.

Alychlo

To do this, he founded Alychlo, an investment company. However, he recently made an important decision. “Two years ago we decided that we had enough companies and that we didn’t need more. It was a bad decision. We are selective, but we must continue to observe,” Coucke said in De Tijd.

Given his slightly older age, Coucke is also thinking about his succession, which could be entrusted to his daughter Chloé or Alysée. “Succeed me? In reality, they shouldn’t and I don’t wish that on them. We cannot expect young people to take charge of a group of 43 companies. However, I have to admit that if they ever told me that they weren’t interested in Alychlo at all, my wife and I would have to think about it. But I don’t think that will happen. » Thus expressed the businessman, who seeks above all to protect his daughters.
