In the north of the department, trees are planted to preserve water

As part of the Territorial Water Contract 2020-2025, the Brivet Watershed Syndicate has launched a new action to restore and perpetuate the bocage playing an essential role in preserving the territory's water resources. Caroline Audrain, technician at the SBVB, explains: “Planting hedges helps improve the quality of our water and facilitates water infiltration into the soil. The water tables are thus better recharged and in periods of drought, the water preserved by the roots of the trees is restored”.

4 km of hedges of various local species will be planted

This year, the SBVB is supporting 14 farms in their plantation projects in the communes of Bouvron, Guenrouët, Campbon, Donges, Lavau sur , Missillac, Pontchâteau, Saint-Gildas-des- and Sainte-Anne-sur-Brivet. Thus, 4 km of hedges comprising around thirty local species will be planted by mid-February 2025 on agricultural land. The development of projects and the implementation of plantations are carried out within the framework of a partnership between the Chamber of Agriculture of and the SBVB.

The planting of plants is carried out by integration companies (Réagis and Aire access) and students. With these agricultural partners (Pays de la Loire Regional Chamber and CIVAM 44), the SBVB offers training to farmers to take ownership of the approach and have the keys to the success of their plantation project.

Discussion times for local stakeholders (farmers, elected officials, municipal technical service agents, associations) to raise their awareness of the importance of maintaining hedges in order to guarantee their sustainability were also organized. The objective of these technical times is above all to create links between different audiences working on the same subjects.

In 2025, other exchange times will be offered on the theme of hedges and water with the same objective of bringing together different profiles and comparing opinions.
