Plowed fields, broken fences… The wild boars are wreaking havoc in the sector Montrabé (Haute-Garonne), a town of 4,300 inhabitants located in the north-east of the Métropole de Toulouse.
“They dismantle the lawns and plow the golf course”
« Ils dismantle the lawns among individuals and farmers, and they plow the golf »tell Robert Vacquiépresident of the ACCA of Montrabé and the AICA of Coteaux de Bellevue. “The damage is very significant.”
A hunt “in a very urban area”
At the start of the week, after receiving several complaints local residents, but also the Saint-Gabriel golf course in Montrabé, the sector's hunting association has carried out – with authorization from the prefecture – a new administrative raid, this time…at foot of housesnear a wood and the town's golf course.
Around the Chemin de Saint-Jean, “the wild boars were at the edge of the houses”, continues Robert Vacquié, specifying that some were also “on the edge of the highway”.
We often do administrative searches, always with a scout lieutenant, but this one was relatively rare, because it was in a very urban area.
Five wild boars killed in one hunt in Montrabé
That Monday, the hunters tracked down the suids in a very urbanized area, on the borders of three municipalities. “We started from Montrabé golfand we went up to Saint John et Rouffiac »summarizes Robert Vacquié.
According to the president of the hunting association, the said hunt was prolific: “five wild boars” were killed in this single outing on the heights of Montrabé.
Wild boars in the housing estate
Further west, around the path of Tomberoussy, still in Montrabé, local residents are almost getting used to seeing wild boars on the prowl, and have not yet seen a hunt in their street. In the middle of a big subdivisiontraces leave no doubt…
-“I have some in my garden,” says a resident
Wild boars? “We see them regularly here,” says a resident. Toulouse Newsbehind its gate which adjoins the road. “The other day, I had some in my garden : I saw a mother with her pigs at the foot of this tree,” he adds, pointing to his property. Outside, as in front of several surrounding houses, traces are fresh.
72 wild boars and around thirty hunts since August
Since August and the opening of the hunting season, Robert Vacquié and the hunters in the sector have killed some “72 wild boars,i.e. the equivalent of four tonnes, in around thirty searches carried out on the perimeter of the AICA des Coteaux de Bellevue, i.e. the municipalities of Montrabé, Saint-Jean, Rouffiac-Tolosan, Saint-Geniès-Bellevue, Saint-Loup -Cammas, Pechbonnieu, Castelmaurou.
Nearly one hunt per day in 2025
In peri-urban areas, hunters obviously do not go out to kill the wild boar with a gun, but with the approval of the authorities recalls Robert Vacquié: “When we have complaints, we make a request to the prefecture, it is they who give us authorization to lead a hunt, under the aegis of a wolf lieutenant”.
And according to the president of the hunters, 2025 started off with a bang: there have already been “about fifteen since the beginning of the year”, i.e. almost one a day!
A strong increase administrative raids which are mainly explained, according to him, by the winter season: “As there are fewer crops in this season, wild boars are more easily “huntable”. In corn or wheat fields, it’s more complicated…”.
“A wild boar that can be aggressive” prowls in Beaupuy
Bordering Montrabé, but dependent on another hunting association, the commune of Beaupuy is not spared from the phenomenon. Here, residents of the Lavaur road notably had the unpleasant surprise of discovering their returned landby wild boars, after they have broke down the fence .
Saturday January 11, an administrative raid was also carried out in this village. The town hall sent an email to its residents in which it calls on “walkers” to “be vigilant” and invites them to “avoid a wood” in the town. “A wild boar that can be aggressiveis currently lurking there,” warns the municipality. “Also, it is not recommended to walk there with children and dogs.”
