Interviewed on October 2, 2024, by journalists from Belgian Radio-Television, Guy Harpigny, the Bishop of Tournai, was very reserved regarding the beatification of King Baudouin (1951-1993), mentioned by Pope Francis during his visit to Brussels on September 28 and 29. « A Rome, it was said that [ce qu’il a fait] was magnificent. In Belgium, we were even more perplexed… The bishops never asked for it,” affirmed the prelate. Before continuing: « [Le pape] asks bishops to participate in this work. Obviously, we will obey. We are bishops. »
During this visit, the sovereign pontiff provoked a wave of indignation for having treated “hitmen” doctors practicing voluntary termination of pregnancy (abortion).
