Nintendo has modified the Joy-Con attachment system for the Switch 2. But the presence of a connector on the tablet makes some observers fear the worst.
The Switch 2 was revealed during a very short presentation video on January 16, 2025. There is still a lot to discover about the console, but the main thing is there: as the rumors predicted, the firm Japanese has opted for continuity, with a concept similar to the first Switch launched in 2017.
However, there are notable developments to highlight, like the new Joy-Con attachment system. Goodbye rails which allow you to slide the small controller upwards by pressing a button, hello the magnetic connection (with a button, always). In terms of practicality, we should gain. However, the Nintendo Switch 2 is not equipped with technology comparable to Apple's MagSafe, since we see the presence of a connector into which the Joy-Con is plugged. A connector that seems to frighten more than one…
Will the magnetic Joy-Cons of the Switch 2 be fragile?
« This looks like a nightmare scenario, a few months after launch », comments internet user jifour98. In this drawing by Kanuiti, we can see the famous “scenario” materialize: namely a connector which could break if you force too much when removing the Joy-Con by tilting it. Pirat_Nation corroborates: “ This Switch 2 connector is going to be a big flaw. » « As soon as I saw it, I thought it was a bad idea. », agrees Gaspard. If the connector breaks, it is not the Joy-Con that needs to be repaired, but the Switch 2.
Are these fears founded? Difficult to say without having the console in your hands and without hindsight on the durability of the design of these magnetic Joy-Cons. We can naively believe that Nintendo tested this system by carrying out extreme tests. However, there is the case law of drift: the Joy-Cons of the first Switch were launched with a real reliability problem, linked to sticks that were too fragile. Therefore, there are reasons to be wary of the solidity of the Switch 2.
We also wonder if these magnetic Joy-Cons will be suitable for a younger audience, who we imagine are a little less careful than the others. Design, more premiumwhich emerges from the Switch 2 suggests that more precautions will have to be taken. On this point, the mediocre finishes of the first Switch of the name constituted an advantage, while those more rewarding of the Switch 2 could be detrimental in certain hands.
Note, however, that this concern is not shared by everyone. Some people trust Nintendo. Like Jeudy, who confides: “ My DS survived a plunge into the toilet, a bullet from an air gun, and scratches on the screen with pen caps. I'm an enthusiast of Nintendo hardware when it comes to durability and child resistance. » Videographer Quinn Nelson agrees, “ I like it when everyone thinks that Nintendo didn't do any rigorous testing. These same doubts were shared with the plastic Joy-Con rails, and it was never an issue. » We hope they are right.
