The prefecture of Haute-Garonne heard the alert from the Occitanie Agency responsible for monitoring air quality (Atmo). Toulouse and the Haute-Garonne know a major episode of pollution, started Tuesday January 14, and which will last for the month until Friday January 17, 2025.
Due to weak wind and low temperatures, concentrations of suspended particles (PM10) in the ambient air have increased in recent days. As a reminder, these particles linked to combustion activities are the most toxic and are those which require special measures to be taken.
The prefecture deploys emergency measures
It's done. The prefect of Haute-Garonne declared level 1 emergency measures to respond to the phenomenon which will particularly affect the department tomorrow. “A persistence of the phenomenon is expected from 12:01 a.m. Friday,” indicates the prefecture.
By decree, emergency measures will apply on the entire department of Haute-Garonne “in order to limit the emission of pollutants”, justifies the state service.
Speed limits drop on the roads
And it starts on the roads. The maximum speed authorized on the highways, national and peripheral of Toulouse, and other roads in the department is lowered.
-On roads normally limited to 130 km/h, you will now have to drive at 110 km/h maximum. Where 110 km/h should not normally be exceeded, the speed should be reduced to 90 km/h. And finally, roads at 90 km/h or 80 km/h will be limited to 70 km/h, this Friday, January 17.
Planned checks
And the prefecture will ensure that the rules are properly applied. THE road speed controls will be reinforcedjust like those for compulsory technical inspection stickers for motorcycles or even those for vehicle anti-pollution.
Trucks, for their part, will be prohibited from circulating in urban areas.
Fires prohibited, industrial activities postponed
Tomorrow too, it will be prohibited to set fires of green waste or amenities, particularly in private homes. On the industrial side, the prefecture is requesting postponement of pollution emitting operations as well as starting the units when stopped.
The call for carpooling and use of public transport
At the same time, the Prefecture obviously calls for limiting CO2 emissions linked to transport by promoting carpoolingthe use of public transport, the reduction of non-obligatory travel, the adaptation of working hours, the use of teleworkthe use of park-and-ride facilities for motorists and, if possible, the use of bikeselectric vehicles… and other green modes of travel.
