Puneet Talwar, United States ambassador to Morocco since November 2022, has left his position, the newsletter announced Thursday, January 16 Africa Intelligence. Before his departure, he held one of his last official meetings in Rabat with Nadia Fettah, Minister of Economy and Finance. This meeting symbolized the end of a mandate marked by notable progress in relations between the two countries.
During his two years in Rabat, Mr. Talwar played a central role in strengthening bilateral partnerships between the United States and Morocco. He oversaw several initiatives in strategic areas, including the deepening of bilateral military cooperation, exemplified by regular joint exercises and technological exchanges to modernize Moroccan defense capabilities. Under his tenure, the US ambassador sponsored private investments in the key sectors of renewable energy, agriculture and aeronautics. American companies were also encouraged to participate in Morocco’s infrastructure projects and energy transition.
Mr. Talwar also supported programs intended to strengthen academic exchanges between the two countries, in particular by promoting Fulbright scholarships and English learning initiatives in Morocco. The departure of the American ambassador occurs in a context where bilateral relations are essential, marked by the presence of security challenges in North Africa. Mr. Talwar helped confirm Morocco’s role as a key partner in the fight against terrorism and the promotion of regional stability.
-This resignation leaves a strategic position vacant in a crucial period on an international scale. Morocco, according to various reports, is at the heart of rivalries between major economic powers. Beijing, already heavily involved in infrastructure projects in Africa, is intensifying its efforts to establish itself in the renewable energy and technology sectors in Morocco. According to American sources in Rabat, no name has yet been proposed to succeed Mr. Talwar. This situation could last for several months due to the often lengthy confirmation procedures in the American Congress, particularly during a period of presidential transition.
