Built between 1902 et 1954, the Dominion Observatory complex is located in another national historic site, the Central Experimental FarmOttawaon the traditional unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabe people. The complex is a collection of distinctive buildings whose architecture reflects the federal government’s forward-looking vision at the turn of the century to establish national scientific institutions in the capital. From 1905 to 1970, the Dominion Observatory complex served as a major center for Canadian scientific research in the field of practical astronomy and its applications in surveying, the Canadian Time Service, and geophysics. The complex also served as a site for outreach and education, with researchers sharing their passion for astronomy with the public through meetings of the Royal Astronomical Society of the Canadapublic lectures, guided tours and stargazing evenings on Saturday evenings. Throughout its history, research and experiments undertaken on the Federal Observatory complex have contributed to the advancement of Canadian scientific excellence.

The designation process under Parks Canada’s National Historical Commemoration Program is based largely on public submissions. To date, more than 2,260 designations have been made nationwide. To nominate a historic person, place or event in your community, please visit the Parks Canada website for more information: https://parcs.canada.ca/culture/designation/proposer-nominate.

“For 65 years, the Dominion Observatory complex has been a major center of research and collaboration in the fields of astronomy, geophysics, seismology, and gravitational studies. The precision of its master clock also helped establish the standards for official time throughout the country. Today’s designation as a National Historic Landmark allows us to share important stories about our cultural heritage and is a testament to the ingenuity and dedication of Canada in the pursuit of scientific excellence. »

Quick facts

  • The federal government established a national observatory in 1890 in a small building located where the Supreme Court now stands. In 1901, a new observation site was chosen in the northeastern part of the Central Experimental Farm. Far enough from the city to avoid light pollution and located on high ground suitable for astronomy and close to a fault line for seismological research, the site could be expanded in the future.
  • The original meridian for Canadalocated on the complex, was determined by astronomical research and served as support for the national official time and survey program.
  • Most of the complex’s early buildings were designed by the Office of the Chief Architect of the Department of Public Works, including the Dominion Observatory (1905), the House of the Observatory (1909), the South Azimuth Building (1912) et Equatorial Photo Building (1914).
  • The government of Canadathrough the Commission of Historic Sites and Monuments of Canada and Parks Canada, recognizes the important people, places and events that have shaped our country in order to help Canadians connect with their past. By presenting these stories, we hope to foster understanding and reflection on the diverse histories, cultures, legacies and realities of the past and present of the Canada.
  • Created in 1919, the Commission for Historic Sites and Monuments of Canada advises the Minister of Environment and Climate Change on the national historic significance of people, places and events that have marked the history of Canada. In collaboration with Parks Canada, the Commission ensures that elements of national historic significance are recognized through the National Historical Commemoration Program and that these important stories are shared with Canadians.
