The day after François Bayrou's general policy speech, Emmanuel Macron continues consultations and appointments at the Élysée.
Beyond the traditional Council of Ministers, he received this Wednesday, January 15, around breakfast, the President of the Senate, Gérard Larcher. Tuesday, he shared coffee with Yaël Braun-Pivet, the president of the Assembly. And if the president had remained distant with Michel Barnier, he is involved again behind the scenes. According to a central bloc leader, he dialogues much more with the current tenant of Matignon.
Officially, at the Élysée, it is repeated that the Prime Minister makes his choices and that the President has not set any red lines. In fact, Emmanuel Macron is very attentive in the way that François Bayrou is launching work on his pension reform. “If it affects retirees, it's because the president said yes“, is convinced a minister close to the head of state.
The two men saw each other several times during the week of negotiations, until a final tête-à-tête on the evening of Monday January 13. On the eve of the general policy speech, the Head of State also reread his Prime Minister's copy and validated the chosen compromise with, as sole vigilance, “the attractiveness of the country and its financial independence”, recall those close to him. Otherwise, “it's going in the right direction”, dares the president's entourage.
Emmanuel Macron will also closely monitor the progress of discussions between unions and employers.
