There will be no votes at federal level on May 18, the Federal Council decided on Wednesday. A year of calm votes is therefore taking shape in 2025.
On February 9, only one federal object will be put to the vote of the Swiss: the Young Greens initiative on environmental responsibility.
Only one other item is ready to go to the ballot box. Last December, Parliament put under wraps the federal decree concerning the tax on secondary real estate, intended to compensate for losses due to the abolition of the rental value in mountain regions.
This object is linked to the law on the change of the taxation system for housing property, which abolishes the rental value. This is why the government has decided to set the date for the vote on the decree when it will be known whether the law must also be put to the vote. The referendum deadline for the law expires on April 19. The vote will probably take place on September 28 or November 30.
The people could still vote a second time on electronic identity (e-ID). The Pirate Party as well as Friends of the Constitution, Mass-Voll and Aufrecht Schweiz are currently collecting signatures for a referendum.
2026, an intense year
On a proposal from the Federal Chancellery, the Federal Council determines at least four months before the date of the vote which objects will be put to the vote on a given date. Up to four voting Sundays are planned each year.
-In 2024, twelve objects were submitted to a national vote, in particular because no substantive vote took place during the second half of the 2023 electoral year.
Next year, the number of objects put to the vote is expected to increase again. Various initiatives currently pending in Parliament should then be submitted to the people, in particular the neutrality initiative and the SSR initiative to halve the radio and television license fee.
