This January 14, 2024, the Prime Minister of Senegal, Ousmane Sonko, was received by the Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El-Ghazouani.

This official visit was an opportunity for Senegal to strengthen its partnership with Mauritania.

Better yet, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko’s 72-hour diplomatic mission to Nouakchott, which ended on January 14, 2025, resulted in significant progress in several strategic areas of bilateral cooperation.

It should be noted that the highlight of this visit was the audience granted by Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El-Ghazouani, current president of the African Union.

During the latter, major issues concerning energy, hydrocarbons, fishing and cross-border infrastructure were discussed. L

The presence of a high-level Senegalese delegation, including Yassine Fall at Foreign Affairs and Birame Soulèye Diop at Energy, also highlighted the importance given to these discussions.

One of the flagship projects mentioned during the interviews concerns the construction of a bridge connecting the two countries.

Discussions also focused on the joint management of the Organization for the Development of the Senegal River (OMVS).

The economic aspect was not left out, with a meeting organized between Mauritanian employers and actors from the Senegalese private sector, aimed at encouraging the creation of joint ventures and stimulating mutual investments.

The question of the Senegalese diaspora in Mauritania was also addressed, with discussions on improving the conditions of stay of Senegalese nationals.

At the end of these meetings, Ousmane Sonko underlined the “strong cohesion of views” between the two countries, recalling the commitment of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye to further strengthen these historic ties.
