Controversy over deer quotas in Haut-Rhin: An environmental association criticizes hunters for not harvesting enough!

Haut-Rhin: Hunters, general public and even ecologists are worried about large wildlife

Recently, we informed you of the problem of excessively large harvest quotas for large deer in their department raised by Haut-Rhin hunters, supported by certain environmentalists. We then explained to you that the departmental federation of Haut-Rhin hunters (FDC68) was worried about the objective set for its hunters for February 1, 2025: 2000 large deer, 350 chamois and 165 deer. An objective which will most certainly not be achieved since there would still be more than 700 deer and 150 chamois to be collected by this date, an impossible mission especially since hunters are seeing a rarefaction of encounters, particularly with large deer. If this reluctance receives the support of the general public (A petition for biodiversity and the protection of large wildlife in the Haut-Rhin has already collected nearly 25,000 signatures) and even leads to this “alliance” with certain ecologists, others obviously prefer to continue hitting hunters in all circumstances.

The Alsace Nature Federation accuses hunters of bad will

Indeed, in a lunar interview on the air of our colleagues from Bleu Alsace, the vice-president of the Alsace Nature federation, Francis Dopff, falls headlong into the hunters, ordered by the ecologist to stick to to samples resulting from quotas set by the departmental hunting management plan drawn up by the CDCFS (departmental hunting and wildlife commission) under penalty of contributing to the disappearance of forests Alsatian! For this gentleman, hunters would have decided these figures themselves and would only have to assume them, which would save the forests endangered by the overpopulation of large herbivores. The man is convinced and affirms that hunters would like to slow down to continue to be able to easily find game for their hunts.

Hunters concerned about the agro-sylvo-hunting balance

No, sir! Hunters are not the only decision-makers within the CDCFS. This commission brings together representatives of the interests of farmers, foresters, hunters as well as representatives of environmental protection associations and the administration and it is under pressure from forest operators that these controversial quotas were set. For the record, for several decades the objective of the world of hunting has been to tend towards agro-sylvo-hunting balance and, if the latter is of course aimed at protecting the forest, so that we can speak of balance , all fauna representing biodiversity must also be preserved in order to maintain populations at a viable level. But hey, for many of these ecology fanatics, a hunter is necessarily at fault, whether he wants to harvest or abstain. With the help of the media and a lot of bad faith, these people are pursuing their objective: to pay for the hunter! As my adjutant told me: “ You always have to hit the same ones. That way, there are fewer people yelling » !
