Sweaters, hats, gloves and winter shoes will remain our essential accessories to brave the cold and stay warm this week. “The weather will remain marked by wintry weather in the plains and mild temperatures at altitude because of high pressures,” summarizes Isabelle Fath, forecaster at MétéoSuisse.
Concretely, what should we expect? This Mondaytemperatures remained wintery in the plains with a maximum of 1°C. At altitude, the weather was largely sunny, except along the Pre-Alps, where banks of stratus, oscillating between 1200 and 1500 meters, persisted until mid-afternoon.
Mardithe cold will remain bitter in the plains with minimum temperatures reaching -3°C and a maximum of 1°C. In Valais, it will be up to -8°C in the central part and -12°C in Haut-Valais. The cold will be felt especially during the night.
Sheets of low clouds
On the Plateau, stratus banks reaching an altitude of 1200 meters will locally cover the sky north of the Alps. Elsewhere, the sun will dominate, even if a few cloudy veils are expected, still at altitude.
Wednesdaywinter temperatures will continue in the plains, with minimums reaching -2°C, up to -8°C in Valais. During the day, the mercury will rise slightly to reach a maximum of 3°C. Low cloud patches are expected below 2000 meters in Ajoie. Above, the sun will be very present and it will be around 0°C at 2000 meters.
Thursday and Fridaymaximum temperatures in the plains will be around 3°C. The Plateau will remain under a thick layer of stratus, with the limit reaching 1100 meters on Thursday and lowering to 800 meters on Friday. These low clouds will only dissipate locally in the afternoon, maintaining a gray and cold atmosphere.
When will the snow return?
What does the week-end? Few changes are expected. There will possibly be more clouds in all regions on Sunday, but conditions will probably still be mild in the mountains.
What about the return of snow? “The forecasts do not provide anything at the moment about the next snowflakes,” declares Isabelle Fath. In meteorologists’ jargon, this means that we won’t see powder again for at least two or even three weeks.
