Hit by a vehicle while jogging, this 38-year-old father was discovered in a ditch by a passer-by. Emergency services were unable to resuscitate him. An investigation was opened: the driver fled after the accident.

A dramatic accident occurred late Saturday afternoon in the town of Gaillac. A 38-year-old man was jogging when he was hit by a vehicle on Avenue Rhine and Danube, on the outskirts of the city. A long, unlit straight line where cars often drive at excessive speed.

The driver did not stop after the impact. The jogger was discovered by a passerby about an hour later, lying on the side of the road. The latter immediately called emergency services but when they arrived, they were unable to resuscitate the victim who died of cardiac arrest.

Firefighters and police “remained on the scene for a long time”, testified Sunday morning a local resident who did not see or hear the accident. According to initial information, the jogger wore dark-colored clothing and did not have a lighting device.

The gendarmes looked for clues that could guide the investigation: traces of paint, debris from flashing lights or bodywork. David Amalric, deputy in charge of security at Gaillac town hall, was called to the scene of the accident a little before 9 p.m. and also participated in the search for clues on the shoulder and the ditch. “We didn’t find anything. We also don’t know if it’s a car, a utility vehicle, or a truck. For the moment we can only talk about a vehicle.”

An investigation was opened to find the driver and try to determine the exact circumstances of the tragedy.
