For the first time this winter, Météo France has triggered extreme cold vigilance in several departments. From Sunday January 12, 2025, an episode of widespread frost will affect a large part of France according to Météo France.
Sunday January 12, 2025 will mark the start of an episode of extreme cold in France, with particularly low temperatures over a large part of the country. Thus, Météo France has decided to trigger extreme cold alert in eight departments, an exceptional measure for this time of year. This system is put in place to protect vulnerable populations from health risks linked to freezing temperatures. The departments placed under yellow vigilance are: Aveyron, Cantal, Corrèze, Creuse, Doubs, Haute-Loire, Loire and Lozère. These areas will experience extremely low temperatures, with risks of hypothermia and frostbite, particularly among the most vulnerable such as the homeless, the elderly or infants.
Météo France has warned that these difficult weather conditions could continue throughout the weekend. Temperatures drop particularly in the northern and northeastern part of the country, where frosts are more severe. Guillaume Séchet, meteorologist, explains that these cold temperatures are due to a “clear weather during the night and the persistence of this cold air which reached France from the north-east“.
Activation of the extreme cold plan
Due to this situation, local authorities will be able to activate the extreme cold plan. This plan aims to put in place specific measures to help the most vulnerable people. One of the first actions is to increase the number of emergency accommodation places. The 115 service, intended to help the homeless, will be strengthened to meet increased needs.
Extreme cold can have serious health consequences, such as hypothermia and frostbite. Météo France therefore calls for caution, particularly for vulnerable populations. The authorities also recommend that citizens limit their travel and protect themselves from the cold to avoid any health risks.
