Chad recovers Abéché military base after French departure

Chad continues to recover its territory with the handover by of the military base located in Abéché, scheduled for this Saturday, January 11. This development comes as part of the withdrawal of French forces, taken after the Chadian decision to end defense and security cooperation agreements on November 28.

This gradual departure was manifested by significant events such as the takeoff of fighter planes from the Adji Kosseï base on December 10 and the evacuation of the Faya base shortly after. The next step therefore consists of the liberation of the Abéché base, as announced by Aziz Mahamat Saleh, Minister of Infrastructure.

The official ceremony, scheduled for this Saturday afternoon, will mark this definitive withdrawal. According to information relayed by our colleagues from Sud Quotidien, the Minister of the Armed Forces and Veterans, Issakha Maloua Djamous, arrived on Friday afternoon in Abéché aboard a specially chartered military plane.

This withdrawal initiative is welcomed by the inhabitants of Abéché, a town formerly ravaged by the violence of French colonization. Indeed, this locality, which constitutes a strategic crossroads between the north and the south of Chad, has long demonstrated hostility towards the French military presence.

An enthusiastic crowd gathered to cheer the minister upon his arrival, expressing visible relief at his departure. However, details regarding the official representation of the French side at the key handover ceremony have not yet been clarified. The information is confirmed to us by Sud Quotidien.
