The circumstances of the accident still unclear

At the end of the day, Patrick Maciejewski, the president of the CTS, gave details on the circumstances of the accident :

There was a demonstration in the Iron Man sector, so it was necessary to reorganize and put a certain number of trains on hold. There was a traffic jam and a train found itself stuck in the middle of a hopper. “The two drivers were not physically injured but they were extremely shocked. They were very quickly taken care of by the emergency services and the CTS teams,” adds Emmanuel Auneau, the general director of the CTS.

Jeanne Barseghian, the mayor of Strasbourg, reacts

« The shock was brutal. I am delighted that there are no deaths and, at this stage, no absolute emergency,” reacted Jeanne Barseghian, mayor of Strasbourg.

“We are in solidarity with the victims who were very quickly taken care of. Thank you to all the police and firefighters who intervened very quickly to reassure people,” declared Pia Imbs, the president of the Eurometropolis of Strasbourg.

Video shared on social media shows chaotic scene

A video from a witness on social networks shows a chaotic scene with two seriously damaged trams in the tunnelat the station level. One of the trams appears to have derailed due to impact.

Strasbourg was the first major French city to put a tram network back into service, from 1994.

There had been no major accidents since.
