Two trams collided at the Strasbourg central station stop on Saturday January 11 in the middle of the afternoon. “The first report shows 20 people in relative emergency”declared a spokesperson for the Bas-Rhin prefecture, specifying that the circumstances of the accident have not yet been established. A large security perimeter was established in front of the station, where numerous ambulances took position, according to an Agence France-Presse journalist on site.
A video from a witness on social networks shows a chaotic scene with two trams seriously damaged in the tunnel, at the tram station, located underground. One of the trams appears to have derailed due to the impact.
The Bas-Rhin fire and rescue service announced, in a press release broadcast on X, that an intervention was underway and that “many means” were mobilized. The latter calls on users to “ avoid the areas Place des Halles, Gare, Boulevard du Président Wilson » in order to facilitate access for emergency services and evacuation of the injured.
The city’s environmentalist mayor, Jeanne Barseghian, declared on X to be on site “ alongside the injured and the rescuers”thanking the latter “for their mobilization”. Traffic on tram lines A and D is particularly interrupted between Parc des sports Poteries and Langstross/Grand Rue, according to the city’s public transport service.
Strasbourg was the first major French city to put a tram network back into service, starting in 1994. There had not been a major accident since.
