Today, Premier Doug Ford outlined Ontario’s plan to achieve America-Canada energy security and drive economic growth on both sides of the border as part of “Fortress America-Canada,” an alliance renewed strategic strategy between Canada and America which is a reference in terms of stability, security and long-term prosperity.
The United States and Canada are each country’s most important trading partners, accounting for trillions of dollars in annual economic activity and millions of jobs on both sides of the border. “Fortress America-Canada” will leverage Ontario’s unique advantages to help America repatriate jobs as it decouples from China, including by improving and expanding the America-Canada Integrated Energy and Power Network to encourage more Canadian energy and electricity exports to the United States.
“With a new administration ready to take office at the White House, our government has an ambitious plan to strengthen the “Fortress America-Canada” to usher in a new American and Canadian century marked by growth, creation of unprecedented jobs and prosperity. We can only achieve this by working together and respecting each other,” said Premier Doug Ford. “The “Fortress America-Canada” should be powered by America-Canada energy of all types, produced, consumed and creating jobs in every region of both countries. With our fleet of nuclear power plants and the first small modular nuclear reactors in the G7, Ontario is ideally positioned to power the future of “Fortress America-Canada”. »
With Ontario already achieving its ambitious energy vision, Ontario’s Affordable Energy Future, the province is growing its safe and affordable nuclear fleet, including the G7’s first small modular nuclear reactors, by acquiring new resources competitively and by building thousands of kilometers of new transmission lines. This diversified energy portfolio, including nuclear power, hydropower, energy storage, hydrogen and renewable energy, natural gas and other fuels, can support the creation of quality jobs, prosperity economic and protection of national security interests shared between Ontario, Canada and the United States.
As part of building “Fortress America-Canada,” Ontario recommends the following additional measures:
• Improve and expand the integrated America-Canada energy and electricity network to encourage more Canadian energy and electricity exports to the United States, including Ontario’s clean nuclear power, to fuel economic growth on both sides of the border.
• Establish a cross-border working group with U.S. and Canadian lawmakers as well as energy and security experts to ensure both countries adhere to best practices in securing power systems against foreign interference, cyberattacks, terrorism and extreme weather, among other threats.
-• Achieve America-Canada energy security faster by streamlining the approval of new small modular nuclear reactors and large nuclear reactors, while meeting consultation obligations and protecting safe operations.
• Develop new and strengthen existing electricity transmission interconnections and natural gas and oil pipelines between Canada and the United States to promote the flow of energy across borders.
• Establish a cross-border working group with U.S. and Canadian lawmakers and industry experts to align regulations and remove bureaucratic hurdles that slow the construction of cross-border energy infrastructure, including transmission lines, interconnections and pipelines.
• Promote the nuclear expertise of Ontario and Canada by establishing a new partnership for small modular nuclear reactors and large nuclear reactors with the United States, including with key states and local or regional authorities of the energy and electricity.
• Increase production of life-saving medical isotopes used in the fight against cancer within Ontario’s growing nuclear reactor fleet to improve outcomes for cancer patients in Canada and the United States.
• Supplement the United States Strategic Petroleum Reserve and further strengthen America-Canada energy by replenishing and enhancing America’s strategic petroleum reserves to protect both countries, businesses and families from the costly consequences of manipulation of global oil prices.
“The America-Canada Growth Plan leverages our province’s abundant energy resources to ensure energy security and economic prosperity for families on both sides of the border,” said Stephen Lecce, Minister of Energy and Conservation. Electrification of Ontario. “By leveraging our advantage in nuclear energy and proven technologies, we can reduce our dependence on undemocratic regimes while producing more clean energy for our economy and the world. Our nations have built the most enduring economic partnership on the planet, and more than ever, we must remain partners in the fight for the workers of America and Canada. »
