Tangier: smart cameras to regulate traffic

The local authorities of Tangier are accelerating the completion of various projects intended to upgrade infrastructure to host the 2025 African Cup of Nations and the World Cup in 2030. Among them, the regulation of traffic on several roads constitutes a project strategic.

According to exclusive data, the operation supervised by the wilaya of the region, which is in its first phase, is carried out on the basis of a field study lasting approximately 85 days, carried out by the company International Lacroix last summer.

Thanks to intelligent equipment and advanced technical means, this company provided detailed statistics which made it possible to detect certain problems.

Among the established figures, approximately 9,120 vehicles pass through the Riad Tétouan roundabout every hour during peak hours, more than 8,200 vehicles pass every hour through the airport zone roundabout, while on the Trial Atlas roundabout -Avenue Moulay Rachid, approximately 5,600 vehicles pass through each hour.

Initially, the Tangier authorities extended the installation of new generation traffic lights on approximately 34 road crossings and 17 pedestrian crossings.

Dozens of cameras will then be installed to manage traffic intelligently from the headquarters of the Tangier police headquarters. According to our information, these cameras, which operate with “WiMAX” technology, are connected to wireless networks at the intersection of roads with the central axis.

They electronically record traffic violations without human intervention. The information is transmitted directly to the control room. They are also equipped with smart traffic light cut-off technology that works with artificial intelligence, improving traffic flow.
