There are many reasons for law enforcement to catch offenders on the road network of the Guadeloupean archipelago. These may be breaches or clearly dangerous behaviors. There were 133 during the first weekend of 2025. However, we must all aim to reduce the number of victims, after a catastrophic year 2024.
At all costs, Guadeloupe must not relive last year's disaster. According to the prefecture's updated report, concerning accidents on the road network of the archipelago, 606 accidents caused 801 victims in 2024 ; 54 people were killed.
Of these, 27 were in cars (including 10 passengers) and 27 were vulnerable users (including 10 on a motorcycle, 1 on a quad, 4 on a moped, 4 on a bicycle and 8 pedestrians). Vulnerable users therefore represent 50% of those who have lost their lives.
But, since the 1is January, it seems that behaviors are not changing.
We have already recorded three serious injuries in a head-on collision in Le Gosier on January 5.
Furthermore, the weekly reports following road inspection operations demonstrate the lack of respect for the Highway Code on the part of certain users.
During the weekend of January 3 to 5, 2025, 103 offenses were recorded in the gendarmerie zone and 30 others in the police zone. There was talk of :
- 15 cases of driving under narcotics ;
- 11 cases of driving under the influence of alcohol ;
- 16 insurance defects ;
- 10 speeding violations, including 1 over 50 km/h ;
- 13 uses of the phone while driving ;
- 7 non-wearing of helmets ;
- 6 for lack of technical control ;
- 9 non-wearing of seat belts ;
- 8 driving license defects ;
- 3 refusals to comply ;
- 1 for crossing the solid line.
- And 1 license plate defect.
In the end, for the first weekend of the year, a few returned on foot !
The prefectural authority has, in fact, suspended 27 driving licenses in the gendarmerie zone, 6 vehicles were immobilized in the police zone and 4 people were arrested.
We therefore see that there is still a lot to do to raise awareness. However, we will only put an end to accidents if we all respect the rules of good driving, caution and good citizenship on the roads.
