Having just returned from a long series of injuries, Nick Kyrgios appears to be suffering from an abdominal strain. The Australian announced his withdrawal for an exhibition with Novak Djokovic to maximize his chances of being present in Melbourne.
His body decided not to let him go. Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn from an exhibition tournament with Novak Djokovic scheduled for Thursday due to an abdominal strain. Big scare a few days before the Australian Open where the Australian is supposed to make his return to the Grand Slam.
The former Wimbledon finalist, who has battled a succession of injuries since losing to Djokovic in the 2022 London tournament final, said on Wednesday he had withdrawn from the event « A Night With Novak » at Rod Laver Arena because of this embarrassment. “Unfortunately, I will not be able to play against my good friend Djokovic this Thursday because I had an abdominal ultrasound and I have a grade 1 strain”posted the Australian on Instagram. “I'm going to rest and do everything I can to be present at the Australian Open”.
A long series of injuries
The 29-year-old has battled knee, foot and wrist injuries and had previously raised concerns about his participation in the first Grand Slam tournament of the year following a loss to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard at the Brisbane International last last week.
Kyrgios, whose last appearance at the Australian Open was in 2022, said after his defeat in Brisbane that he feared his wrist would not withstand a Grand Slam tournament. Despite these concerns, Kyrgios has been retained in Australia's Davis Cup team which will face Sweden on January 31 and February 1. As a reminder, the Australian Open begins on January 12 at Melbourne Park.
