For Dorian Cherioux, the year 2024 should be marked with a milestone. This 29-year-old young man, whose family is from Bléré, made a name for himself by running not one but two marathons during the year even though he is severely asthmatic.

Therapeutic educator at the breath space in , Dorian Cherioux returns to The New Republic on this exceptional year. “I have severe asthmahe explains. This is the highest level of asthma, affecting 5% of asthmatics. »

“I am bothered by the symptoms on a daily basis”

It all started as a teenager when until then Dorian Cherioux had no health problems. “I started coughing a lothe says. It started with allergies, to pollen, to dust mites. The diagnosis was only made after ten years of symptoms. I was diagnosed with asthma in 2018 and severe asthma in 2020. I am bothered by the symptoms on a daily basis. Conventional medications are heavy in terms of side effects. Fortunately, there are new treatments, biotherapies and they are life-changing. »

Despite these new treatments, Dorian describes the impact the disease has on the lives of those affected: “cough, shortness of breath, isolation…”

The young man, refusing to let this pathology limit him, decided to take up sport. “I wasn’t a great athlete beforehe specifies, but I decided to do the 10 km from Tours. Initially, during the first training sessions, I had to stop after 1 km. I did a year of respiratory physiotherapy, here at Espace du souffle… And I was able to do the 10 and 20 km of Tours in 2021, then half-marathons in 2022-2023. And so two marathons this year. »

“Friends ran with me”

Despite his severe asthma, Dorian – who has since become a therapeutic educator at Espace du souffle – managed to complete the 42 km of the marathon. “I had never run more than 30 kmhe says. I didn't know at all if I would be able to get over this wall. Fortunately, I was accompanied by Professor Marchand-Adam, from Bretonneau, and friends ran part of the course with me. It was a beautiful moment…”

A renewed victory in September during the Tours marathon during which Dorian gained another three minutes on his Paris time. An event which also made it possible to raise funds for Espace du Breath, the association which helps patients suffering from respiratory diseases in Tours.

Invited to discuss at the Ministry of Health

These two marathons succeeded by the young Tourangeau are also “a message of hope”. “I now give lectures to explain my patient journey, Dorian explains. People who have this pathology feel diminished, they are afraid of doing sports. While physical activity helps you get better. Moreover, since the Paris marathon, I have been received by the Ministry of Health where I campaigned in favor of the reimbursement of sports sessions for asthmatics. »

At the dawn of a new year, Dorian Cherioux plans to set new goals: take up cycling, swimming… And of course continue to run.

He already has plenty of projects for 2025 such as the Barcelona half-marathon, the Milan marathon, the Chamonix 10 km. So many challenges that he now feels capable of taking on.
