Another early elimination for Junior Team Canada

The Canadians lost again in the quarter-finals against the Czech Republic.

    • Not enough goals and too many penalties

This is the observation that the senior management of Team Canada Junior (ECJ) made on Friday, the day after the elimination of the Canadians in the quarter-finals of the World Junior Hockey Championship. They lost 4-3 to the Czechs, also their losers in 2024 during the tournament presented in Sweden.

    • 13 goals and 113 penalty minutes

Canada head coach Dave Cameron reacts after forward Cole Beaudoin received a 5-minute penalty during the first period of the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship quarter-final against Czechia in Ottawa, Thursday January 2, 2025.

Canada was held to 13 goals in 5 games – just two more than Kazakhstan – on the strength of a tournament-low shooting percentage of just 6.34%. Their players were also the most penalized with 113 penalty minutes, ahead of the Kazakhs (79 minutes).

    • “These are the two factors that were fatal for us. When I look at our group, I love our team. We have a lot of talent, they know how to skate and we can do a lot of good things, but we didn’t do them. »

    • The selection process pointed out

Even before the first skate, the ECJ selectors were criticized for their choices. Among other things, they ignored three players drafted among the top 10 in the NHL: big forward Beckett Sennecke, Carter Yakemchuk and Zayne Parekh.

    • “I believe that the selection process was honest and that we invited the players who most deserved to have a position. I think we had a great team that could win the gold medal, but it didn’t happen. »
