Even Tesla has had to make considerable efforts to maintain its sales at the end of 2024. The Tesla Model Y remains the leader in the ranking of 2024 electric cars in France, but the gap with the French brands is narrowing.
The month of December ends a very strange year in terms of electric car sales in France. If the month of December is not as catastrophic as other months of 2024, registration volumes remain down compared to 2023 according to AAA Data: -20%. It must be said that the month of December 2023 recorded a record number of electric vehicles (mainly Chinese), which would be deprived of the ecological bonus in 2024.
Registrations of electric cars still recorded a drop of 3% over the year, despite the 50,000 social leasing files. Even Tesla is not spared from market difficulties.
Model Y remains in the lead, but with a reduced lead
In December 2024, the Tesla Model Y is in first place in electric car registrations with 4,807 units. This figure is 4% higher than that of December 2023. The brand has agreed to commercial discounts to achieve this objective. However, the model is being closely followed by the Renault 5, a sign that the gap with the French brands has narrowed.

Over the year 2024, the Model Y is down 23%, despite the 28,755 registrations which take it to the head of the electric car ranking.
The Tesla Model 3, which led the way in December 2023, is paying dearly for the loss of the government bonus. Registrations are down 82% compared to December last year, and the model records an overall decline of 53% over the year. This is a thorn in Tesla's side on the French market. Especially since the Model S and X are also in free fall, haunting the bottom of the rankings.
There were a lot of R5s under the tree, for the rest, it's more complicated
Renault managed to register 4,681 examples of its R5 e-tech in December. This is an improvement compared to the month of November, which was already particularly good.
Note that BMW continues to place its iX1 ever higher in the ranking of electric cars in France. The brand also included the iX2 and i4 in the TOP 20 for December. The German manufacturer is still taking advantage of the slack on other models usually high in the ranking: Peugeot e-208, MG4, Fiat 500e…
The rest of the December registrations do not present anything particularly remarkable, other than a significant slump in the Stellantis group's models.
