Voted last spring, the measure desired by environmentalists is based on two pillars: solidarity and sobriety.

This new pricing is based on different axes, the first being a price per cubic meter differentiated between individuals and businesses.

Concretely, the rate for households is divided into three sections:

– a first where the first 12 cubic meters are free for everyone.

– a second between 12 and 180 m3 of water consumed per year, where the current rate applies. The latter will be decided as every year in June by the management.

– a third tranche of large consumers (more than 180 m3/annual) with a price multiplied by two.

Progressive pricing in order to meet the Metropolis' objective of reducing drinking water consumption by 15% by 2035 in the territory.

Beyond 180 m3 of water, which is abnormal consumption, there will be increased pricing to move towards control and sobriety. We estimate these households at less than 5% today and we hope to be able to support them to have more reasonable consumption“, assured Bruno Bernard, president of the Métropole de , during the vote last year.

On the professional side, pricing is divided into four tranches, always with a logic of progressive prices. The current rate for consumption from 0 to 180 m3, then a gradual increase which will not exceed an additional 15% for the last tranche.

Help for households in precarious situations

Consuming less but without penalizing the most precarious: this is the challenge that the Metropolis of Lyon is taking on.

In addition to progressive and differentiated pricing, a “water solidarity payment” has been put in place, estimated at between 20 and 80 euros per household concerned. To benefit from it, no additional steps are required: the water solidarity payment will be calculated using data from the CAF, among others.

Intended for users for whom the water bill represents more than 3% of their financial resources, the payment serves in particular to avoid the phenomena of deprivation of basic necessities. Between 100,000 and 120,000 households would be affected.
