Those who thought that this would never happen can thank the overall project to requalify the district in L'Aigle (Orne). Without the destruction of a few buildings and the school La Ribambellewhich will not be rebuilt, the renovation of theVictor-Hugo school would probably not have been considered any time soon.

Kill two birds with one stone

To the great dismay of the Town of L'Aigle, which relied on the decision of the majority, the Community of Communes (Cdc) of the Pays de L'Aigle seized the opportunity to kill two with one stone. blows. With this integration of La Ribambelle on the Victor-Hugo site, transforming it into a primary school, the community is (finally) renovating this 40 year old building without having to build a new nursery school.

The matter is well thought out, even if many have complaints about the educational presence within La Madeleine and the need to travel from the neighborhood to Victor-Hugo via the busy Boulevard.

“Respect a place awarded at its creation”

Last Tuesday, a meeting at the Victor-Hugo school was offered to local residents, parents and community officials. Véronique Helleux, vice-president of the Cdc in charge of school affairs, presented the costed project to 6.6 million euros making it possible to accommodate the 9 elementary classes as well as the 5 nursery classes, while solving the recurring problems of leaks.

La Ribambelle nursery school in L'Aigle will not be rebuilt

The technicians of the architectural firm note that one of their commitments “is to include this renovation in a neighborhood project and to make 40% energy savings”. The idea is to “respect a place that was awarded at its creation” with exterior insulation for greater performance and a facade made of plaster and bricks.

A refectory for the little ones, a cafeteria for the adults

Concerning the distribution of spaces, “we will have the little ones downstairs and the big ones upstairs” and “we are preserving the amphitheater which is part of Victor-Hugo’s DNA. Nursery and elementary schools will each have their own playground, each their own refectory (Editor’s note, self-service for CP-CM2 classes).” The multipurpose room will be for adults.

According to the intervention schedule established by Shema, a local operator specializing in development, the construction of public facilities and corporate real estate, calls for tenders are carried out from December to February, “but we We will have early work starting in January, followed by asbestos removal starting February 24 and continuing until March.”

Traffic near Victor-Hugo, a textbook case

Traffic and parking near Victor-Hugo are difficulties that are not new. It is also a real textbook case, as the situation is reproduced almost everywhere where educational establishments exist. The problem demonstrated in an article about the bus station is a glaring example.

Near Victor-Hugo, “it’s already complicated with only elementary classes in the morning and evening, what will it be like with nursery schools on top of that? » asks parents worried about safety. Local residents say “avoid going out in the car on rue du Buat when the children are entering or leaving school, in order to avoid accidents”. Parents add that “the students do not walk on the sidewalks and take up all the space on the road”. Which can be another source of problems.

In order to secure these thirty minutes in the morning and thirty minutes in the evening, the developers, in collaboration with the City of L'Aigle and the town planning of the Community of Municipalities, are working on a project for a new traffic lane. In one direction, it would allow you to go from rue des Sports to rue du Buat then rue Marcel-Angot.

Some parking lots would be created, as well as a drop-off point near the school entrance. To compensate for the densification of traffic on Rue des Sports, it could quickly become one-way (Editor's note, towards the high school) and the descending traffic would be via Rue du Docteur Blaizot.

Beyond that, “there is also a consideration of rue Marcel-Angot, the width of which would allow for parking on the slopes”. Work must also be carried out near the McDo roundabout “in order to create better conditions of access for families coming from the La Madeleine district”.

No hypothesis is circulating at the moment about this arrangement.

In class in 2026

From April and until the end of June, the rehabilitation work and transformation into a primary school will occupy the site, before the layout of the courses and the moving in of the teams in July and August. In September 2026, the students of the 14 classes will be in their new school.

The architectural firm notes, however, that “from Monday January 6, earth-moving equipment will be there to prepare for the arrival of the modular classes”. Upon returning from the February 2025 holidays, students will be educated in pre-fabricated facilities chosen in order to “avoid interactions with the construction site, provide greater comfort with regard to nuisances and facilitate the intervention of companies”. Each class will be 42 m².

During the work, an outsourced lunch

A construction site fence will be installed to separate children from the work.

We could possibly show the students the site and, why not, create vocations in the construction professions.

The architectural firm

During the work and from February 24, school meals will be provided outside. CP-CE1 and CE2 will go to Molière college in a room set up for lunch at 12:15 p.m. CM1 and CM2 will go to the Napoléon high school and will have a dedicated space in the refectory for lunch at 11:45 a.m. For everyone, the meal time of 45 minutes will be respected.

Anita Noël, director of the Cdc school service, explains that “we are authorized by the City to take a pedestrian path passing through the Foisy stadium, starting from the Victor-Hugo school. The two groups will be accompanied by four accompanying facilitators.” Of course, requests will be sent to parents so that they authorize the students to leave the establishment.
