An 18-year-old young woman, who was riding an electric scooter, lost her life Thursday evening after being hit by a car in Mechelen, a city located between Brussels and Antwerp in the north of Belgium. The victim was accompanied by a 19-year-old friend who had to be hospitalized after the accident. The 36-year-old driver, who was driving under the influence of alcohol, allegedly drove at a speed of 100 km/h, on a street limited to 50 km/h.
The driver fled after the collision, but was able to be located thanks to video surveillance images. Around 10 p.m., the man ended his life by jumping from a bridge which spans the E314 motorway in Holsbeek, the Leuven public prosecutor’s office said on Friday.
The motorist’s mother tells The Latest News having been able to reach his son on the telephone, a few moments after the accident. “He repeated about twenty times: ‘I can’t live with this, I killed someone. I killed someone,'” she said. For him, it was black or white and nothing in between. He panicked to no end. I still begged him to come back.”
The driver thus lived with his mother and his brother, each in a part of the house. “When he was drinking, he normally took the bus,” said the mother. Sometimes his friends would take him home. I don’t know why he drove himself this time. My son is now a criminal because he killed someone. He would never have been able to bear all the gossip and other backbiting.”
