In the war she leads recreational consumption nitrous oxide, the mayor (Union Capitale) of the 8th arrondissement of Paris, Jeanne d'Hauteserre, won a new battle at the end of December 2024, with the order taken by the Paris police headquarters relating to the consumption, possession and, in certain sectors, the transport of this gas, the use of which is regularly diverted in the festive environment for its euphoric effects. Another, even more decisive, will take place on January 27 in the Senate.
Transport and possession of nitrous oxide prohibited without proof
At the end of November, the councilor alerted the Council of Paris about the resurgence of this phenomenon which led, in September 2021, to a serious accident on the upper part of the Champs-Élysées. She also broadcast a wish so that the transport and possession of nitrous oxide are prohibited, in the Champs-Élysées sector and over a given period. The latter had then been adopted unanimously.
Less than a month later, this took the form of a decree, taken for the period from December 24, 2024 to March 24, 2025 (inclusive). It prohibits, in particular, its detention and transport on the avenue des Champs-Élysées, from Friday at 10 p.m. to Monday at 5 a.m., except for people who can justify professional use or commercial.
A victory for Jeanne d'Hauteserre, who congratulated herself onParis news Thursday December 26: “This shows that our request was heard by the prefecture. The system has also been extended to other districts.”
Change the law
The continuation of his fight will now take place in the Senate, at the end of January 2025. “I met the Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau, after this wish and a bill (PPL) will be carried out in the Senate, in order that an amendment brings nitrous oxide in the list of drugs“, she continued.
Before concluding: “A law already exists but it mainly concerns minors, it is insufficient! There is urgency, because it is not just laughing gas. It can have serious indirect effects, as in 2021.”
