After a white Christmas throughout Quebec, it is green that could mark New Year’s Day in several regions of Quebec. Forecast.
White everywhere
A few days after Christmas, Quebec is completely in white. There is even a little more snow than the season average in Montreal and Sherbrooke. Quebec, Rimouski, Saguenay and Gaspé are well below average coverage to end the year. On December 27, a thin 5 cm of snow was measured, whereas this measurement is normally 17 cm. The rest of Quebec observes a white carpet of a thickness similar to the average of recent years.
GOOD TO KNOW: What to do with your food in the event of a prolonged outage? The answer here.
But not for long
But these numbers will change dramatically on Monday. First, a system coming from the southern United States will bring a cold shower, and even lukewarm in certain areas, on the already fragile snow in several regions. Aside from certain sectors of Abitibi and Jamésie, all of Quebec will be irrigated during the day on Monday. Rain could even be abundant in the St. Lawrence Valley, in the areas of Montreal, Trois-Rivières and Quebec. Up to 50 mm of rain could fall locally in these areas.
Up to 12°
Then the mildness will support the rain in its mission of destroying the snow cover. Maximums will be above the freezing point throughout Quebec on Monday. Even Chibougamau, which must negotiate with an average maximum of -12° on this date, will see a maximum of 3°, the same as in Val-d’Or and Sept-Îles. In Outaouais, in the Laurentians, in Saguenay, in Bas-Saint-Laurent and in Gaspésie, the maximum will be 5° or 6° on Monday. Quebec will see a maximum of 8°, Montreal will reach the threshold of 10°, and Sherbrooke could see the mercury rise to 12°.
Green in the spotlight
Result: the lawn will be exposed across almost all of southern Quebec for New Year’s Eve. Montreal and the Montérégie, Basses-Laurentides, Lanaudière, Estrie, Beauce, Mauricie and the Capitale-Nationale will probably not see snow at the start of the new year. Even Gaspésie will be green, apart from the mountainous areas and certain parts of the Baie des Chaleurs. The Lower North Shore, from Mingan to Blanc-Sablon, should also be covered in greenery for the New Year.
Return of the snow
But all is not lost for board sports enthusiasts. The first system of 2025 will waste no time in proposing a new white regime. Snow is expected to return for most regions of Quebec on Thursday, January 2. Only the Gaspé Peninsula and the Lower North Shore will be deprived of snowflakes and will probably see rain rather than snow to start 2025.
