This is a habit in many cities in France: every first Wednesday of the month, a siren sounds at noon. This noise is that of the population alert and information system (SAIP).
These sirens are the subject of a exercise “in accordance with article 4 of the decree of March 23, 2007 relating to the technical characteristics of the national alert signal”, explains the prefecture of Ille-et-Vilaine in a press release.
But exceptionally, this tradition will not be respected in January 2025.
The exercise postponed
The prefecture explains that “Wednesday January 1, 2025 being a day holiday, it was decided, for the entire metropolitan territory, to postpone the monthly test from January to the following Wednesday, i.e. January 8, 2025 at 12 o'clock”.
As a reminder, the SAIP consists of “a structured set of tools allowing the dissemination of a signal or message by the authorities. Its objective is to alert a population exposed or likely to be exposed to the consequences of a serious event”, specifies the press release from the prefecture.
“The exercise signal only lastsone minute and forty-one seconds, without repetition, unlike real alert messages which are repeated several times. »
