It’s Christmas and the writing of But! engages in the traditional end-of-year review through the prism of the tree. For this first chapter devoted to RC Lens, focus on the situation of David Pereira da Costa.
Even if the current period gives way to the end-of-year celebrations, let's not forget that next January 6 will take place Epiphany, or Three Kings Day. A title that a certain David Pereira da Costa has been chasing for several years now. Indeed, the man nicknamed “the little prince of Gaillette” joined the training center in 2013, and has climbed quite a few ranks since.
Appearing for the very first time on the team sheet among the pros in March 2020 (against Orléans, before the championships were stopped due to COVID), he was then brought to join Franck Haise's group a few months later , from the season of the return to Ligue 1. After a first goal scored against ASSE during the 28th day, on March 3, 2021, he delivered his first assist as a professional against Nîmes, the April 25 which followed.
Beautiful promises, then…
Beginnings which showed great promise. The following season was that of confirmation, with 3 goals and 5 assists, then 1 goal and 3 assists in 2022-2023, and finally 5 goals and 3 assists last season. All punctuated by a few absences due to injury, particularly to the shoulder. Despite several flashes and periods at the top of his form, the Lensois attacking midfielder has never managed to find the consistency that he lacks so much.
This season is off to a pretty bad start for him, given that he only has one assist in 12 games. Sometimes starting, sometimes replacing, or even sometimes outside the group, the Portuguese does not have a very clear situation in Lens. In this sense, a departure this winter seems inevitable for the 23-year-old player.
The door is wide open!
It must be remembered that the RCL will have to sell for 44 million euros net this winter, and that it will certainly not close the door to a not really essential element in its ranks. Several clubs have even already expressed their interest, such as Portland in MLS or Besiktas in Türkiye. Valued at 7 million euros, David Pereira da Costa (under contract until 2026) could bring a nice check to his training club. A nice Christmas present, certainly a little late, but the main thing is elsewhere.
