On Friday December 20, 2024, a 43-year-old inmate incarcerated at Poissy prison (Yvelines) escaped during a transfer to the Moroccan consulate in Pontoise (Val-d'Oise). Sentenced in 2016 to 15 years in prison for kidnapping followed by death, the man is now actively sought by the police.
A planned escape from the consulate
According to information reported by CNews, the individual benefited from an escorted exit authorization to go to the Moroccan consulate in order to renew his identity papers. Around late morning, he allegedly took advantage of a moment of distraction from the escort to ask to smoke a cigarette on the steps of the building. At that moment, he ran away and joined a vehicle waiting for him nearby, said Maryvonne Caillibotte, public prosecutor of Versailles.
An investigation into organized gang escape
Faced with this spectacular escape, the Versailles public prosecutor's office opened an investigation for “organized gang escape” and “criminal association”. The case was entrusted to the judicial police services of Yvelines and Val-d'Oise, as well as to the National Fugitive Search Brigade (BNRF). At midday Saturday, December 21, the fugitive had still not been located.
A heavy criminal past
The detainee, sentenced to 15 years in prison for acts of kidnapping followed by death, was considered a dangerous individual. This escape raises questions about security protocols surrounding prisoner transfers, particularly for administrative procedures outside prison establishments.
A large-scale police mobilization
Law enforcement is stepping up efforts to find the fugitive. This escape, which appears to have been carefully planned, heightens concerns about criminal networks capable of organizing these types of operations.
