Sarah Bernhardt, la divinefrom the director Guillaume Nicloux and the screenwriter Nathalie Leuthreauis strangely the very first French film dedicated to the actress, a century after her death. It took time to shed light on this passionate and exciting character.
Here is the trailer:
Two temporalities
Cleverly, the story layers two crucial events of the life of Sarah Bernhardt: the amputation of her leg and her day of national tribute. The staging thus constructed on two temporalities makes it possible to avoid the overly classic biopicand revives the scenario while retracing, without running out of steam, thirty years of a whirlwind life out of the ordinary.
Sandrine Kiberlain transmits, through her fair acting, all her pleasure in interpreting this magnificent woman, avant-garde, creative, lover thirsty for freedom, leading all her partners in a jubilant waltz in the middle of flamboyant period sets and costumes.
The film does not seek to hide all the cracks in the sacred monster, making Sarah Bernhardt even more fascinating, this icon finally humanized.
