PORTRAIT – Discreet after a series of electoral failures, the former head of government inherits the Overseas portfolio and the prestigious status of Minister of State.
His main fault has often been to be right before others. Theorist of both « irreconcilable lefts »and slayer of political Islam, Manuel Valls paid dearly the price of political lucidity. Victim of a hate campaign orchestrated by La France insoumise, and guilty of incomprehensible back-and-forths between Paris and Barcelona, the former prime minister had recently fallen into disgrace after a series of electoral failures which forced the erasure. Removed from social networks, the ex-socialist adhered to a discretion that was unlike him. But, far from renouncing his public commitment, he was in fact ready in the event of a return to the forefront.
To everyone's surprise, the former deputy mayor of Évry (Essonne) has just been promoted to Minister of State in the government of François Bayrou, where he inherits the very sensitive Overseas portfolio. A subject that he had almost made one of his “reserved areas” when he was at Matignon. Which will be useful to him, given the extremely hot issues that await him, as there are so many emergencies in the overseas territories. Particularly in Mayotte, ravaged by Cyclone Chido, and which is still counting its deaths, while a national mourning was organized this Monday in tribute to the many victims of the island.
