This day of national mourning was decreed by the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron to pay tribute to the victims of Cyclone Chido in Mayotte. Ten days after the disaster the situation in the territory is critical. On the archipelago, a minute of silence was observed this morning.

Chido struck Mayotte on December 14. The Indian Ocean island suffered for several hours wind gusts reaching the 220 km/hour devastating homes, hospitals and administrations in its path. Since then, residents have been living in more than precarious conditions, deprived of water and electricity. A provisional report shows 35 dead and 67 seriously injured.
Faced with the scale of the disaster, the President of the Republic went to the site and declared December 23 a day of national mourning. Today at 11 a.m. across France, we observed a minute of silence and contemplation to show solidarity and support for the inhabitants of the island.
A tribute paid to the Mahorais in France and in all overseas territories. On the Place du Général de Gaulle in Saint-Pierre, the atmosphere was solemn this morning. In the presence of local elected officials, nearly 150 people responded to the call.
It can happen anywhere and we must show solidarity with the Department, with the French wherever they are. It's important.

On the Place des Ardilliers, around thirty Miquelonnais also showed their empathy and support for the victims.
