Due to the national day of mourning in tribute to the victims of Cyclone Chido, which notably affected Mayotte, which takes place this Monday, December 23, the City of Avignon has decided to postpone its big Christmas fireworks display which was to take place hold the same evening. It will finally take place this Saturday, December 28.
Last Saturday, December 14, intense tropical cyclone Chido hit the entire island of Mayotte hard, where gusts of more than 220 km/h were recorded. Cyclone Chido is the most intense that Mayotte has experienced in 90 years. The toll currently shows 35 dead, 67 seriously injured and 2,432 lightly injured. Thus, the President of the Republic declared a day of national mourning in tribute to the victims of the cyclone this Monday, December 23.
As a sign of solidarity of the Mahorais, the City of Avignon has therefore decided to postpone its fireworks display which was to take place this Monday, December 23 to Saturday, December 28 at 7 p.m. on the banks of the Rhône. For the occasion, the tram will be free and parking will be possible before 5 p.m. in the Piot, Oratoire, Allées de l'Oulle and Palais des Papes car parks. The Route Pons (RD 225) and the Daladier and Kingdom Bridges will be closed to traffic from 5 p.m. and the Daladier Bridge will be closed to pedestrians between 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
The City is also organizing a moment of reflection, to which the entire population of Avignon is invited, in front of the city hall this Monday, December 23 at 11 a.m.
