the essential
Lucien Rioull benefited from a check for €3,000 thanks to the Bouchon Catharou action. Enough to make this septuagenarian, who had both legs amputated at 72, more independent.
Lucien Riouall saw his destiny change at the age of 72. Although forever seated in an armchair, he escaped death. According to a victim support association, it is not a rare case since, in France, “the number of people suffering from nosocomial diseases reaches the incredible figure of 750,000 per year, or around 7% of hospitalizations complicated by infections”. He says: “I had my right leg amputated at the end of 2020 and then, a year and a half later, my left leg.” Affected by arteritis since the age of 30, he plays down: “I still have my autonomy thanks to the chair.” Moreover, the day after his first amputation, he promised the surgeon that he would walk again and kept his commitment until the second. “The most complicated thing is often access. I used to do archery but I have to find an association”simply laments the Leucate resident. Its foundation is also there thanks to Bouchon Catharou du 11, this beautiful association chaired by Bernard Sanchez. Saturday December 14, he and the other volunteers gave the courageous Lucien €3,000. A sum which will allow the Rouaill wife to equip their vehicle. Her husband continues: “Fortunately we have people like them who give their time. It’s very friendly, I’m happy to see them again.”
Caps from all plastic bottles
Collecting, sorting and selling plastic caps, but also recently cork caps, is not an easy job for the Catharous. “When the money comes back, we help people who need a helping hand to live their daily lives better”says Bernard Sanchez. “Organizations are not always up to the task. Mr. Riouall's case was initiated by the CPAM, it's a first, and we responded. Given his problems, he needs steering wheel controls, as much as it is very dynamic.” And to remind: “There are people who think that we only collect caps from water bottles… but no, those from milk bottles, ketchup bottles, insecticide bombs, pens, etc., all the plastic caps and cork can be placed in the collectors. Two supermarkets in Narbonne also have bottle crushers. Next to it, there are our containers to put the corks, the price is the same, you just have to remove it. Today, we also celebrate all the hard work of the volunteer teams.”
11 and a half tons will soon go on sale and help meet a new need. This should bring in between €350 and €400 per tonne.
