It tastes like a Proust madeleine, the flavor of childhood. “Peter and the Wolf” is music written by Prokofiev to introduce children to classical music. An easily accessible work that still appeals, 88 years after its creation.
The Pays de la Loire National Orchestra (ONPL) offers this musical tale created with Nantes singer Dominique A in 2020 and published as a CD book nicely illustrated by Nantes illustrator Lili la Baleine. The orchestra, made up of a phalanx of around fifty musicians, performed Prokofiev's tale three times on Thursday December 19 at the Convention Center. An audience of young children discovered the story of young Pierre and the animals who surround him, represented by the instruments of the orchestra.
This masterpiece of the children's repertoire, popularized in France by the actor Gérard Philipe and his 1956 version, is beautifully told here by Dominique A, delicate and elegant, alongside the orchestra, led by conductor Karine Locatelli, all in its didactic interpretation. For this last meeting of the year, the ONPL offered an encore of another Christmas classic, the “Farandole de l'Arlésienne” by Georges Bizet.
