The Jean-Sébastien Pons college, located in the Moyen-Vernet district of Perpignan, is classified as an REP + establishment. The school climate is one of the principal's priorities. And it is through workshops and cultural projects that Johann Mouysset works to make students proud of themselves and feel involved.
Taking the reins of an establishment classified REP + (Priority Education Network +) can be a challenge for some principals. Johann Mouysset, newly arrived as director of the Jean-Sébastien Pons college at the start of the 2024 school year, considers that he “you have to team up, value your students and make them proud“to succeed. By being part of this so-called “REP +” classification established by National Education and which concerns isolated neighborhoods with social difficulties”having a strong impact on academic success“, the Middle Vernet college benefits from additional resources and collective educational initiatives for better monitoring of students.
“Support, accompany and be a facilitator”
This is how, following the model of his predecessor, the new principal of the establishment, who last year occupied the same functions at Jean-Moulin college, continues to revitalize the college. “I want a systemic approach to school climate. When you arrive in an establishment, you have to be part of continuity and make improvements. My role is to support, accompany and be a facilitator. My goal is to promote all teams“, confides the principal. “Team up” also resonates in the words of Johann Mouysset, an expression which fits perfectly with the partnership that the establishment has with the USAP. Indeed, due to its location close to Aimé-Giral, the college has access to certain infrastructure of the Top 14 club stadium. “They notably gave us the benefit of the prestige fair on the occasion of the traditional graduation ceremony (National Brevet Diploma and General Training Certificate (CFG)“. A meeting which honored the students in the presence of the teaching teams and their parents this Tuesday, December 17.
The Pons college at the Municipal Theater of Perpignan
But what has driven the establishment since the start of the school year are its cultural projects. “Since last year, the 'All Actors' project has brought cultural awareness to students. What if we moved towards excellence in all areas, particularly in the arts?“, continues Johann Mouysset. In collaboration with La Fabrica Center d'Arts, a musical theater training school based in Perpignan, the four levels of college benefit from a “Theater Time” course. “All students have a common cultural core and we go even further. Some classes participate in theater workshops and create plays. It is a pride to announce it, but the Pons college will perform in May at the Municipal Theater of Perpignan“, continues the principal. In addition to the arts, the establishment places emphasis on history. If traditionally the different classes of each level of a college are designated by numbers or letters (3e1, 3eA…), at Pons college it is the Catalan resistance fighters who are honored to name the sections. We are thus dealing with the 3e Brutus, the 3e Torcatis or the 3e Torres. “It is important to promote all projects, whether cultural or artistic. And the pride of students who feel valued will lead to success and a positive image of the establishment.“, concludes the principal.
