The Lyon bar opens an investigation after the controversial comments of the lawyer of an accused of the Mazan rapes

When silence would have been more eloquent…

The bar confirmed this Friday, December 20, that it had opened an ethics investigation targeting Mr. Christophe Bruschi, a Lyon lawyer, after controversial remarks made at the end of the Mazan rape trial. “Every lawyer is subject to ethical rules of which the President is guarantor”specified the order, after being contacted by an individual and a fellow lawyer.

Me Bruschi, registered with the Lyon bar, defended one of the accused in this extraordinary trial, where 51 men were tried for gang rapes committed on a woman drugged by her husband for a decade. His client received the lightest sentence in the judgment: three years in prison, two of which were suspended.

Leaving the court, the lawyer sparked a lively controversy by saying in front of the cameras to a crowd of people protesting the decision: “My client has a message for you, to all these hysterics, these foul-mouthed people: the message is: shit!”. He added in particular: “Come on, knitters!”in reference, according to his explanations, to women attending executions during the French Revolution.

These statements, described as insulting by many feminist associations and political leaders, caused a wave of immediate indignation on social networks. Faced with this controversy, the Lyon bar has undertaken to examine the situation to decide on possible disciplinary action to be taken.
