As bicycles pass by, the cycle path lights up. No Christmas decorations in sight, but one interactive floor marking intended to make cyclists more visible to cars. This pioneering device, tested in Issy-les-Moulineaux (Hauts-de-Seine), was developed by Colas, a Bouygues group company specializing in transport innovations. Called Flowell, the system has already been tested on pedestrian crossings. Thursday December 19, 2024, it was inaugurated for the first time on a cycle path.
A device to limit the risk of accidents
Located at the intersection of the RD50 (rue Rouget de Lisle) and the RD7 (Quai Franklin Roosevelt), near the Issy bridgethe system reveals continuous and discontinuous light lines and bicycle pictograms integrated into the ground thanks to a alimentation LED. This is only activated when sensors are triggered by the passage of cyclists.
Thanks to this “dynamic and interactive” marking, motorists are alerted to the presence of cyclists and encouraged to stop when they turn right towards the RD7,” explains the municipality. They benefit from better visibility, which limits the risks linked to blind spots or lack of attention.
This project was developed as part of the European Elaborator program, the objective of which is to promote and implement “safer and more sustainable mobility”. In this context, Issy-les-Moulineaux is the scene of several innovative experiments until November 2026, including Flowell.
