As part of its European cooperation policy, Nantes has been twinned with the City of Tbilisi, capital of Georgia, since 1979. This active twinning supports numerous associative and cultural partnerships based on common values, democracy and 'opening . In the current context, the City of Nantes expresses its concern about the Georgian political situation, in accordance with the statements made by European institutions and France.
Nantes Tbilisi twinning
The twinning between Nantes and Tbilisi supports cultural and educational exchanges (teaching of
French in Tbilisi, welcoming Georgian high school students, crossed literary residencies, concerts, courses
Georgian dance, etc.) and athletes (participation in the Nantes Marathon, sporting and intercultural stay
with young people), supported in particular by ACCOORD, the Nantes – Tbilisi association, AGIRabcd Loire
Océan or the Univerciné A l’est festival, Trempo and Grand Ourse Production.
In view of these bonds of friendship and cooperation, the City of Nantes today expresses its
concern about the political situation in Georgia: intimidation against representatives of the
civil society and the political opposition following the legislative elections and then the appointment of the
new President do not go in the direction of dialogue which is at the heart of the values of Nantes.
The City of Nantes supports and relays the calls from the European Parliament and France in favor of
democracy, while respecting the aspirations of Georgians.
