Maria Deulina, painter and sculptor, exhibits her works, with 52 other artisans, at the Salon des Artisans Créateurs du Mans, an event organized by the Association des Métiers d'Art de la Sarthe. The artist confides in Vitav.
Can you introduce yourself in a few words?
I am Russian and have lived in Le Mans for twelve years now. I previously lived in Moscow where I was an architect. Today, I live my passion through my works. Painting is the story of a life, I have been practicing this discipline for over 30 years.
“I explore various techniques depending on the creations”
Why come to the Salon des Artisans Créateurs?
This is my first registration at this show. My goal is to introduce my work to the general public. Before, I sold my creations through word of mouth. This show gave me the opportunity to reach a larger number of people.
“For the sculptures, I like to assemble shells collected on the beach or purchased from professionals. I arrange them so that they form faces, masks that chase away evil spirits”
“I really like the theme of anachronism”
How do you create your works?
I like to explore different techniques. For the paintings, I really like the theme of anachronism. I go to antique dealers and modify 19th century paintings. Once I have restored the painting and the frame, removed the varnish which is blackening, I integrate modern elements such as weapons or telephones to give a humorous touch. The challenge is to create a naturalness and give coherence to the work by playing on the light, the size or the shape of modern objects.
“I create imaginary worlds”
What is inspiring you at the moment?
I enjoy working on bridal globes. The tradition in the 19th century was to offer the bride a glass globe intended to collect her bouquet. I create imaginary worlds. I display porcelain figurines, children's toys or artificial flowers. Then I paint the whole thing so it looks like porcelain cookies.
