The future 176th basilica of France

It must be said that the future basilica has all the makings of a remarkable church for its “antiquity” and its “fame”, two criteria among others to benefit from this title which more particularly links a building to Rome and the Pope. Indeed, for more than 700 years, the Notre-Dame church has been the destination of a pilgrimage. After discovering Notre-Dame de Boulogne, in present-day Pas-de-, King Philippe IV the Fair had a sister church built a few years later, not far from the capital, so that the pilgrimage would be shorter. Over time, a new city was formed around the sanctuary, named Boulogne until its merger with its neighbor, Billancourt, in 1926.

The 176th French basilica

Out of pastoral concern, the Bishop of Nanterre has wanted, since his arrival in 2018, to revive this ancient tradition which is his “original vocation”. So he decided that the Notre-Dame basilica would be a “diocesan sanctuary” in 2020. Since then, the town hall has launched a vast program of work to restore its luster and colors. On January 12, 2025, it will become the 176th French basilica, including four built by Francis: Saint-Bonaventure (), Saint-Joseph-de-Bon-Espoir (Haute-) and Saint-Michel-des-Lions () . A great way to begin the 2025 jubilee, that of the “pilgrims of hope”.
